Vine Weevil causes plant damage in both it's adult and larval stages. The larvae can cause the most lethal damage by destroying the roots of the plant so severely that it dies. The adult causes irregular-shaped notches on the leaf margins, mainly in the summer. Plants growing in pots or other containers, out of doors or under cover, can be particularly severely affected by vine weevil grubs.
The Vine Weevil larvae or grubs are "c" shaped, creamy white with a brown head and no legs and up to 10mm long. They are found in the soil or plant compost. The larvae are normally active in the spring and late summer/early autumn, but can sometimes be found all year round in heated greenhouses.
The adult Vine Weevil is pear shaped, dull black in colour and up to 9mm long. It feeds at night and makes distinctive notches in leaf edges. Female adults lay hundreds of eggs, which develop into larvae. The safest and easiest way to control Vine Weevil is by using biologial pest control by treating with nematodes.
