Root flies lay their eggs into the soil around certain young vegetable plants. These eggs hatch into maggots that then burrow into the roots and stem. Particularly susceptible are various brassicae varieties and carrots. Infested brassicas begin to wilt whilst carrots and other root veg suffer unsightly holes and scars.
