Leather Jacket

Leather Jackets

Leatherjackets, are the grey-brown larvae of the Crane fly or 'Daddy Longlegs'. They grow 3 to 4 cms in length and are mainly found infesting lawns. During the day, leatherjackets mainly feed on grass roots in the upper few centimetres of soil, then at night, they emerge to feed on grass leaves and stems. They cause most damage to the lawn in late spring and early summer, when large leatherjackets who have survived the winter resume feeding. In late summer, adult crane flies emerge to mate and lay eggs into the ground. These adults do not cause any damage, but the resulting larvae will soon start to produce dead areas of a lawn as they feed. Reducing the numbers of Leatherjacket larvae can be acheived by treating with Just Leatherjacket nematodes. These microscopic worms can be watered into the soil beneath the grass, where they will enter and kill the Leatherjacket larvae. The main period for applying Just Leatherjacket Killer is from late August-October. A spring application can be made if the soil temperature is above 10.c. Applications to lawns are quicker and easier using a handy feeder attached to a hosepipe.
