In the early spring, snails emerge from their winter hibernation to find suitable places to feed and breed. Moist areas of the garden are preferred although they can survive in dryer places by retreating into their shells and sealing the entrance with a mucous door. Snails particularly favour a damp environment to lay batches of 30 to 100 jelly-like eggs in to the ground. After the eggs hatch, the young remain together for several days before dispersing. Snails are more active at dusk, particularly after rain when they emerge to feed on a wide range of plant species. Fresh young plants and seedlings are particularly susceptible. Nematodes are not very effective against snails, as they working underground whilst the snails are above ground. There are a number of ways to protect plants from snail attack. One way is the use of Copper. This gives off a static charge, snails then drop off or will not move over. Copper can be applied as adhesive copper tape to pots or as copper bands around plants. Another safe organic system is the use a beer trap trap like the Slug X trap. There is also now a safe pellet that can be used called Advanced Slug Killer. The active ingredient of this is naturally occuring and does not harm wildlife, pets or humans.
