Whitefly are more commonly recognised in their adult form, resembling small moth-like pests on the underside of many different horticultural and ornamental plants where they lay their eggs. As the plants grow, the eggs hatch into scale-like larvae that are unable to move. Both adult and juvenile whiteflies feed on plant sap and produce copious amounts of honeydew, which promotes the growth of sooty moulds. Some whitefly species can also transmit plant viruses.
