There are many species of thrips, some of which are commonly termed ‘Thunder flies.’ Adults are about 1-1.5 mm long and are very mobile. Different species differ in colour, varying between black and a light yellow - brown colour. Female thrips can lay about 60 eggs, each into a slit cut in a leaf or flower tissue. Thrips feed on both pollen and plant sap. Feeding areas become dry and have a silvery speckled appearance. Some thrip species can transmit plant viruses.
