In the early spring, slugs emerge from winter hibernation in search of damp surroundings in which to live and breed. Moist areas of the garden, particularly where rotting plant material and mulch are present attract slugs where they lay clumps of 30 to 120 jelly-like eggs in to the ground. After the eggs hatch, the young remain together for several days before dispersing. During the day, slugs remain hidden in cool, dark places, under dead leaves, lumps of earth, rocks, and wood. At dusk, they emerge in search of food which comprises a wide range of plant species. Fresh young plants and seedlings are particularly susceptible. One of the most effective treatments for Slugs is Just Nemaslug Killer using nematodes. These tiny microscopic worms kill slugs and nothing else. They are safe to the user, the environment and wildlife. The nematodes are watered into the soil and move through it killing slugs. They can be complimented with the use of Advanced Slug killer pellets on the surface, which have a safe naturally occuring active ingredient, which also does not harm wildlife. Other protective products like Just Slugstop and Just Slug Protect can be used to prevent Slugs getting to plants, especially small or young ones.
