New Chafer Grub Trap

Just Green are very pleased to announce a new product to combat the damage caused by Chafer Grubs on lawns.

One of the most damaging and common lawn pests, Chafer beetle larvae can live in the soil for up to three years and when emerging in the spring, can consume large quantities of grass roots, stripping a lawn bare in a short period of time.  Very often the first clue that the larvae are evident in the soil is the feeding frenzy of large birds, Badgers and Foxes as they rip up dying grass to eat the white grubs.  (Chafer grubs are "C" shaped with six legs at one end and a red/brown top with a dark grey cap at the other end).  Left untreated the combination of grub damage and predator damage will completely destroy the lawn.  Most noticeable signs are patches of dead or dying grass similar to that caused by leatherjackets, with very loose thatch indicating that the root system has been consumed.

The Garden Chafer Trap is aimed at the Garden Chafer beetle commonly known as the "May" or "June" bug and will provide an early warning system to the presence of the pest.  If adult beetles are detected then it is very likely eggs have been laid in the turf which will then develop into the damaging chafer grubs, (white larvae) that will munch away on grass roots.

The trap will catch adult beetles and help reduce the number of egg laying adults in the surrounding area.  This monitoring device will also help more accurate applications of nematodes to kill the chafer grub larvae in July and August.

The trap is supplied with a powerful pheromone which attracts adult chafer beetles and this in combination with the yellow vanes on the top of the trap, attracts the beetles to fly in and drop down to the funnel trap beneath.  The trap can be re-used each year when a new pheromone capsule is added.  The trap should be placed in lawn areas at 50 - 100 cms above the ground and placed into position in May & June.  One trap will cover 2000 sq. metres or half an acre.
