Late summer nematode applications

The late summer is an important time for applying nematodes to control various garden pests. Many of the pest life cycles are at a stage when they are most vunerable to nematode attack. Soil temperatures are warm, which helps nematode activity and new generations of pests are appearing prior to overwintering or hibernation. From August-October is a key time to control pests and prevent a large perecentage of them re-appearing next season.

VINE WEEVIL

Adult Vine Weevil have now laid many eggs, these are now turning into Vine Weevil larvae. These larvae will damage and kill plants by feeding on their roots. If left untreated, they will survive the winter and start feeding again next spring. Summer treatments are often more succesful than spring ones, due to the higher soil temperature. Applying JUST VINE WEEVIL KILLER nematodes to pots, containers and open flower beds will significantly reduce the damage caused by Vine weevil and help prevent early damage next year.

LEATHERJACKET

Crane flies often known as Daddy long legs lay their eggs late August-early September. These quickly develop into Leatherjacket grubs or larvae, which then eat the roots of grass, turning lawns yellow and attracting birds and animals, which in turn dig up the lawn looking for them to eat. To prevent this and to stop Leatherjackets overwintering in lawns, apply JUST LEATHERJACKET KILLER nematodes before the end of October.

CHAFER GRUB

Chafer grub larvae cause very similar damage to lawns and are also now present in many lawns. They also overwinter deep in the lawn if left untreated. Use JUST CHAFER GRUB KILLER nematodes also before the end of October.

CATERPILLARS

There are also caterpillars active at this time of year. These can be controlled with JUST CATERPILLAR KILLER nematodes. They are safe to apply on edible crops and plants.

So get busy with nematodes and reduce pest problems now and for next year.
