2008 - Summer of the Slug

According to an article in the Daily Mail this week, we can expect an epidemic of Slugs over the next few months and according to consumer magazine Which? Gardening, the damp summer last year meant more than 70 per cent of their readers had a serious problem with slugs. The early indications are that this summer will be even worse.

Ceri Thomas, editor of Which? Gardening, said: "The weather over spring has been mild with showers which creates the perfect moist conditions slugs do well in.

This time of year gardeners are putting out bedding plants and flowers such as dahlias which slugs love.

The trend for planting more of your own veg is great news, but slugs love those too and they will happily chomp through your lettuce and strawberries.

It can be really disheartening when you've looked after your plants in pots for months only for them to vanish when you plant them out.

I put out a whole tray of tobacco plants and the following morning I only had one left!

Not only are slugs unattractive, they can also do a huge amount of damage to your garden - they really are the stuff of gardeners' nightmares."

The article goes on to suggest using nematodes to control slugs. Just Green can supply Just Nemaslug Killer for this purpose and remember you can order a programme of control, which allows you to maintain Slug nematodes in the soil through out the season.

If snails are also a problem, we advise the use of Advanced Slug Killer pellets. This product does not harm wildlife and uses a naturally occurring active ingredient to kill snails and slugs.

Dont let Slugs and Snails eat the fruits of your labour!
