Ideal for sparrows, robins, tits and blackbirds and particularly useful in the breeding season for growing chicks. Mealworms are the larvae of the Tenebrio molitar beetle, which lives in flour and has a vegetarian diet. This ensures that they are safe to feed birds and animals. Mealworms are odurless, rich in protein and easy to store. They are also relatively cheap.
Mealworms can be stored for several weeks under the right conditions by transferring them to a container, (such as the "Mealworm storage box") and adding some bran or the specially formulated "Progrub". This provides food for the mealworms whilst in storage. Mealworms in storage should be kept cool. Avoid low temperatures for long periods and if offering the worms for feeding in wet weather, do not allow the mealworms to be covered in water as this will kill them. Mealworms should be fed to birds in shallow, smooth sided bowls or trays, which are ventilated to reduce dampness. Quantities of about 150 at a time is recommended. Mealworms are supplied as regular or mini for younger birds.
